  • 8 slices slices of bread Stale bread works best for texture.
  • 4 ounces sliced ham Feel free to mix different types of meats.
  • 4 ounces sliced turkey
  • 4 ounces Swiss cheese, sliced Can be substituted with other cheeses.
Custard ingredients
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Serving items
  • Powdered sugar for serving To dust on top before serving.
  • Jam for serving Pairs well with the dish.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer half of the bread slices in the bottom of the prepared dish.
  3. Add layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese on top of the bread.
  4. Top with the remaining bread slices.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt.
  6. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread.
  7. Press down gently to ensure the bread is soaked in the custard.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the top is golden and custard is set.
  2. Allow to cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar and serve with warm jam.

Notes

You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, warm individual portions in the microwave or bake the entire casserole at 350°F until heated through.
